About 3 months ago I taped this note to the wall in my work space.

I don’t recall exactly what caused me to write the note – somebody in my life didn’t approve of a choice I made, and I realized it was MY job not to buy into their opinion, not theirs to support or agree with my choice.
I’m 70 years old and I raised 3 children who are wonderful adults. I have successfully navigated several work environments. It is time to own my own walk, not to be swayed by others.
I can’t expect everyone to agree with my actions at all times; that’s not reality.
My kids, husband, siblings, and others are not magically going to support all my choices.
It’s MY responsibility to be confident enough to walk my walk.
I’m not saying I always make the absolute best choice, but I know who I am, what’s important to me, and what my values are.
I can listen to others’ opinions and proceed onward without angst if they don’t align with my choice.
This orientation has brought significant change to me. I’m not saying I’m perfect at it yet – the business of hearing others’ opinions about my choices in a calm and nonreactive way …but I have the note upstairs to remind me that I am competent in my own life.
I am extremely grateful to have arrived here.
