Spider trust

It was nippy this morning when I woke. 68 degrees in the house and significantly colder when I went out into the dark morning to get some firewood.

My husband tends to feel chilled in the morning, so I started a fire. I sat for a while, feeding the fire with small bits of wood to make sure it was well established.

And then I saw it. A spider moved on the outer piece of wood …down to the left side of the stove box.

I was surprised she could still walk around in there. It was obviously a temporary situation. (It felt like a “she” so I’m going with that.)

It was a type of spider I didn’t like in the house. Over an inch long and they look kind of creepy – almost menacing. But my heart went out to her. I was not going to stand by and watch her die

I found a twig and extended it, touching the firewood.

At first the spider moved away from it, tucking into the space between the stove side and the end of the wood. She was not happy about this interspecies situation any more than I was.

I knew she couldn’t last long, and I moved the twig into that area, where I could no longer see her.

And then she was on the twig! I couldn’t believe it. It seemed so amazing to me that she hopped onto it.

And then I felt the trust from her. She had no other choice but to take the leap to trust.

I was a bit unsettled, but I walked to the door, unlocked it, and brought the spider outside. I kept a close eye on her – making sure she kept her distance on the 8 inch twig.

I found a spot nearby with some weeds behind a concrete ledge and I tapped the twig.

And all was well.

Now, 30 minutes later, I still feel the impact of this rescue in my heart.

I experienced a significant connection with the spider.

I know she had to make a choice to trust me.

I felt …and I feel …a shift within me that has impacted me in a surprisingly deep way.

I don’t know how to explain it.

I feel it is related to the times we are in …times of expanded love.

I realize she must have come in on the firewood I just brought in. Will she tell the story of this morning’s adventure to other spiders?

I feel some minor regret that I didn’t walk a bit farther and find a grassier garden spot. But spiders are savvy and crafty and I’m hoping this one can navigate her environment well.

Mostly I feel gratitude …that she and I managed to handle the situation successfully and perhaps take a turn toward interspecies trust.

And I wonder how many other humans and spiders and cats and skunks …and such …are changing our world, slowly moving toward trust.

And I look forward to the outcome of all this transformation we are engaged in.

Blessings and gratitude.
